1 (I, T) if a river, lake, or container overflows, it is so full that the water, material etc inside flows over its edges: The toilet's just overflowed again.
(+ with): a trash can overflowing with papers (overflow sth): The river had overflowed its banks.
2 overflow with love/gratitude etc to have a very strong feeling of love etc: My heart was overflowing with gratitude for the old man.
3 (I, T) if people overflow a place, there are too many of them to fit into it
(+ into/onto): The crowd overflowed into the street. 2 noun (C)
1 (singular) the amount of something or the number of people that cannot be contained in a place because it is already full: The overflow will be accommodated in another hotel.
(+ of): the overflow of water from the lake
2 (U) an act of overflowing something
3 (C) a pipe through which water flows out of a container when it becomes too full
